“Steel Magnolias”, the first play of the 71st Season of Island Players opens on September 19, 2019. This classic comedy-drama was written by Robert Harling as a way of coping with the passing of his beloved sister, Susan, who died from complications related to diabetes at the age of 33 in 1985.

“Steel Magnolias” is set entirely in a “beauty salon” in a small town in Louisiana where women gather to laugh, gossip, cry and offer friendship and understanding to each other. Wise-cracking Truvy offers shampoos and free advice to; her assistant Annelle, the town curmudgeon Ouiser, the eccentric Miss Clairee, the local social leader M’Lynn and her daughter, Shelby, who is about to get married. The group’s strength and love is a tribute to friendship and the power of the human spirit as the women support each other through good times and bad.

The cast, directed by Mike Lusk, assisted by Priscilla Boyd, is comprised of a strong and accomplished group of female actors: Jennifer Kwiatkowski as Truvy Jones, Tahlia Chinault (first week) and Caitlin Ellis (second week) as Annnelle Dupuy-Desoto, Cathy Hansel-Edgerton as Clairee Belcher, Corinne Woodland as Shelby Eatenton-Latcherie, Kelly Wynn Woodland as M’Lynn Eatenton and Sue Belvo as Ouiser Boudreaux. (In this production, the mother-daughter roles are played by real-life mother-daughter actors, Kelly and Corinne Woodland.)
